Mound Westonka girls hockey takes on Blake in semifinals Tuesday

The Mound Westonka girls hockey team came out with a 4-0 victory over Totino-Grace in the section quarterfinals on Friday, Feb. 7, advancing to the next round of play.

The White Hawks will take on Blake in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Parade Ice Garden. Blake in the No. 1 seed and defending its 2013 Section 5A state title.

"Blake has a very good team and we look forward to the rematch. Last year in the tournament I think we gave them the best game out of the games they had leading to the title," head coach Chris Erickson said. "We have been focusing on getting up the ice quick and limiting turnovers."

The winner of this game will go to the section championship game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Parade Ice Garden. If Mound Westonka wins, the girls would play No. 2 Breck or the No. 6 Princeton/Big Lake/Becker.

At Friday’s game, the White Hawks outshot Totino-Grace 37-24.

"The girls played very well they were the most focused I have seen them, and you could tell they were determined from the warm up," Erickson said.

Junior Abby Brustad fired off the first goal of the night 12:28 into the first period. She was assisted by sophomore Lana Fitz and freshman Hunter Gallus.

The second goal of the night came at 5:11 in the second period by senior Grace Holmen with the assist from Fitz. The girls sealed the game with two more goals in the last period of play.

Brustad got a second goal with the assist from junior Jori Mazurek and sophomore Ashley Luehmann. Fitz had the final goal of the game with help from Gallus.

The White Hawks lost 2-0 to Totino-Grace in the last regular season game.
